Vision for University of Portsmouth Christian Union

“Growing together in Christ and making Christ known”

This is, God-willing, the vision that we are focusing on this year in UPCU.
Everything we do this year, including main CU meetings, hall groups, and evangelism is to
seek to fulfil this vision. This vision incorporates 3 main aims for us as a Christian Union:

1. Unity

· Unity in Christ and the cross – the core of the Christian faith. We are united in Christ as
Ephesians 4:4 says – “There is one body and one Spirit –
just as you were called to one hope when you were called”

· The CU focuses on issues of first importance, the truth about who Jesus is and
what He has done for us on the cross.
This, and the other core issues, are outlined in the Doctrinal Basis.

2. Maturity

· ‘Growing together in Christ’. The CU seeks to encourage individuals to grow in their
personal relationship with God and to love one another as Jesus loves us.

· Our aim is to encourage one another and build each other up as we worship God in
main meetings, seeking to honour Him in all we do.

Hebrews 10:25 – “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing,
but let us encourage one another”

· We aim to encourage students to be disciples of Jesus Christ in the student world.

3. Mission

· ‘Making Christ known’ – this is the focus for this year as a Christian Union.
· We believe in the truth of the gospel, and aim to be shaped by it,
explain it to others and trust God will extend His kingdom, because
‘it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes’ (Romans 1:16)

· As part of God’s plan, He has placed Christians in Portsmouth to spread the
good news of the Lord Jesus Christ to unbelievers.

· The CU aims to tell the gospel in obedience to God. As outlined in the
Great Commission in Matthew 28:19 - “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…”

· Our aim is to keep the gospel central in all evangelistic events,
for “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

· We as a CU must be equipped and fed from the Word to be effective in evangelism.

· 1 Peter 3:15 – “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you
to give the reason for the hope that you have” We must be prepared in and out of season.
